Distinguished Name

A distinguished name identifies an object in a hierarchical directory.
The syntax of distinguished names was orginally formulated in RFC 1779 («A String Representation of Distinguished Names») and RFC 2253 («Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (v3): UTF-8 String Representation of Distinguished Names») (and then updated in RFC 4514 («Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP): String Representation of Distinguished Names»).
