Vim: viminfo

The viminfo file is used to store:

• The command line history.
• The search string history.
• The input-line history.
• Contents of non-empty registers.
• Marks for several files.
• File marks, pointing to locations in files.
• Last search/substitute pattern (for 'n' and '&').
• The buffer list.
• Global variables.

If such a viminfo file is used is controlled by the viminfo option.

The default location for the viminfo file is ~/.viminfo

vim - editing

The command line option -i specifies the viminfo file to be used. If vim is started with -i NONE, no viminfo file is used at all.
