Turning off most Windows sound

The following simple PowerShell iterates over all sub keys under HKCU\Apps\Schemes\Apps and removes the default values of .Current:
set-strictMode -version latest

$apps = get-item 'hkcu:\AppEvents\Schemes\Apps'

foreach ($appName in $apps.GetSubKeyNames()) {

   $appName

   $app = $apps.OpenSubKey($appName)

   foreach ($eventName in $app.GetSubKeyNames()) {

      $event = $app.OpenSubKey($eventName)

      $current = $event.OpenSubKey('.Current', $true) # Open with $true for write access
      $default = $event.OpenSubKey('.Default'       )

      if ($current) { $currentVal = $current.GetValue('') } else { $currentVal = '' }
      if ($default) { $defaultVal = $default.GetValue('') } else { $defaultVal = '' }

      "   {0,-30} {1,-60} {2,-60}" -f $eventName, $currentVal, $defaultVal

      if ($currentVal) {
         $current.DeleteValue('')
      }
   }
}

TODO

What is the relationship of the *.wav files beneath the .Default key to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Sound and mmsys.cpl?
