A display manager is the first X program run if the system (as opposed to a user) starts X.
The display managers lets a user log in.

GDM (Gnome), KDM (deprecated), Xdm, LightDM, LXDM, SLiM (Simple Login Manager), SDDM, qingy etc.

Login manager

Login manager is a synonym for display manager.
